Well done to our new grades, who worked hard in the lead up to the grading and did their best on the day. It was a particularly tough wringer for the green belts, but they came out the other end. Particular highlights were Serena's intensity and precision and Ranvir showing extremely smooth techniques. Well done!

Knowledge of the full NNK (Nage No Kata) is a requirement for dan grade, but you need to know parts of it for purple belt.
Regional instructors put our grades through their paces, showing them the intricacies of the paired partner work, Nage No Kata. They looked in detail at the 6 throws we teach first within the Foundation.
TJJF Phase 1 (Uki Otoshi, Ippon Seoi Nage, Uke Waza)
TJJF Phase 2 (Uki Otoshi, Seio Nage, Uki Goshi, Ura Nage, Yoko Guruma, Uke Waza)
If you missed out, or want to look back as a reminder, remember you can always watch the video of the full Kodokan NNK on Youtube that we follow, but remember you only need the above throws until you get to brown belt.
When watching videos it is always worth making notes and it is advised to focus only on the uke for the first watch and then focus only on the tori for the next watch.

A really good showcase from both our younger and older members from across the region. It was wonderful to see so many of you from across our "town" clubs in York, Bradford and Meanwood. Sensei Simon highlighted the importance of balance taking before going into lovely lofty throws. Young Sensei Alex imparted some great tactics for if you are approached by an aggressor who is getting ready for a fight and Sensei Rebecca focussed on approaching ko and o uchi gari from different situations.

Well done to our new green and purple belts, who worked hard to show Sensei Gareth the techniques that they had been mastering. They made us all proud. Well done!

Thanks to all the Yorkshire regional instructors for their input on the day - lots of techniques learned, lots of fun had. Even Sensei Simon had fun, even if you can't tell from his face in this picture 😂

Thanks to Sensei Joe to taking the orange+ session in Meanwood. He certainly put everyone through their paces and it was great to see the development of our regional jitsuka.

Well done to our new green belts, who were put through their paces in their latest grading. They worked hard and performed well. Here they are, enjoying a well earned cool drink afterwards. Thank you also to Sempai Adrian for accompanying them for support.

Randori Nationals Course & Competition (18+), Warwick
Saturday & Sunday 4th & 5th May 2024
A fantastic event where jitsuka trained in grade groups for part of the morning and then in mixed grade groups later in the morning before the afternoon's competition. We had a small representation from the club and we very much enjoyed our evening meal together on the Saturday night at a local Greek restaurant followed by socialising with Sheffield Jiu Jitsu and a number of other clubs later on. A highlight of the weekend was the promotion of a number of senior instructors to the rank of Godan - showing technical excellence and dedication to the Jiu Jitsu Foundation. It was a pleasure seeing them wearing their newly gained black sleeves. There are photos on the Jiu Jitsu Foundation's Community Facebook page here.
Regional Summer Course + Celebration
Saturday 27th April 2024
Thank you to Sensei Simon Hewings for excellent instruction at our regional course this term. From looking at how to open up an attacker to take advantage of their vulnerabilities to the concept of being a counter-attacking art, his engaging teaching was filled with humourous tales, but also an emphasis of the importance of being able to talk yourself out of trouble. His take on how to approach over-the-belts was one I had not come across before and I look forward to sharing with my students, alongside a nuance on the pegleg which I shall certainly be stealing. He pointed out several drills throughout his teaching that could be easily practised, solo and at home, whilst also giving us an insight into how he trained for his previous grades when he wasn't in the dojo.
Hopefully we'll be able to catch more of him at the Nationals!
